The Scary Monks of Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai

Monks Modeled from Wax and Resin that Make You Look Twice

Firstly, these are not real monks – I have never been so much as disconcerted by an actual, live monk.  This is a quick post to show you some wax monks we found in the small temple at the back of Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai.

I wonder if they posed for their likeness while alive?

This slightly grumpy one is my favourite!

They are made to honour highly respected monks who have practised well. What do you think of them?

They show an amazing level of detail, not just in the face…

This one seems happier

The monks can be found in their permanent positions in the smaller temple located behind the main one you see from the road.  The door of the smaller temple looks like this: impressive red and gold facade You can visit these monks yourself if you’re in Chiang Mai.  Wat Phra Singh is within the walls of the old city.  As it is one of the larger temples in the city all tuk tuk and songthaew drivers will know where it is and it is located on most of the free maps (which most of the others are not.) Here is a map, just in case: View Larger Map
